My Review:

This was a thoroughly enjoyable read which moves along at a fast pace and takes the reader on a roller coaster journey as a group of 'misfits' search for treasure. The 'tribe' are not searching for the treasure out of greed but to save one of the families, this is all very admirable and heartwarming which had me rooting for them all the way through to succeed. BJ Rowling and DG Lloyd give us a snap shot into the lives of their protagonists and the inter-relationships between and within the families and whilst I initially wondered where we were going with this, starting events before the quest that follows is essential for creating the back story that creates the heart central to the story and drives the action too.

The characters are well drawn and with recognisable tropes from the real world. Teenagers were teenagers with stirring or exploding hormones, and the resulting gamut of emotions lighten the danger with a healthy splash of humour. The story is reminiscent of The Goonies, and I would suspect a deliberate homage to it, without in anyway taking away from its own originality as history, mystery and magic all collide to form a rip roaring read.

I loved the backdrop of the 1812 American war and it's modern day parallels, the dastardly upper class British villain, Roberts, who although a violent psychopath actually made me laugh too. His sidekick Bruno is stereotypically brawn and no brain but the addition of mumbled speech and his humorous impatience make it hard for the reader to truly fear him even though in real life both Roberts, and Bruno, would be terrifying.

There's a lot of warmth in this story, friends who are selflessly there for you is something we should also have in our lives. Ditto with integrity, we should all altruistically aspire to do the right thing and this group have it in spades.

Look out for the oblique Harry Potter reference too :)

BJ Rowling and DG Lloyd have formed a dynamic and winning writing team and I look forward to the next in what I am confident will be a highly succeful series.
