My Review of Leo and the Lightning Dragons by Gill White

My Review:

It was an honour and a privilege to be part of the blog tour for Leo and the Lightning Dragons. Gill White (@leolightdragons) has created a beautifully written homage to her son Leo who suffers from an extremely rare form of epilepsy. The accompanying illustrations by Gilli B are gorgeous and so wonderful for small children to devour, savour and revisit. As an adult, I particularly loved Leo's knight's outfit that is paired with trainers. I felt this cleverly positioned Leo as both a fictional knight and a real little boy.

Leo and the Lightning Dragons tells the story of Leo's battle with the metaphorical lightning dragons who inhabit his body and take over his life. It's an empowering story and Gill uses a simple vocabulary that will delight children without ever patronising them. There are multiple fonts in a multitude of sizes to engage young readers. Key words are in bold and not always in black, Gill clearly knows what will make children return again and again to Leo and the Lightning Dragons and I am sure that they will.

At its heart Leo and the Lightning Dragons is a story of empowerment when the only change we can make is how we handle the cards life has dealt us. We should all try and be like Leo.
