My Review of Shed No Tears by Caz Frear
Well it's been a year's wait that has felt like an eternity, but it was well worth it for the third instalment of Caz Frear's: DC Cat Kinsella's series... It's Frear's best yet.
Cat is in fine fettle as she investigates the previously solved case of Holly Kemp, believed to be the fourth victim of the serial killer Christopher Masters. Cat being Cat is determined to see justice done for Holly even if this puts her at odds with both her own team and the initial investigators. In the real world victims often lose their identity as they become 'the first victim' etc, I'm ashamed to say that I could name you several infamous serial killers but not one of their victims. Frear brings Holly to life with all her flaws, sometimes I liked her, sometimes I loathed her but ultimately I felt profound sympathy as her past was slowly revealed. Frear gives us a salient reminder that as a society we tend to be judgemental and label others based on very limited information, and that we can all do better than this.
Shed No Tears is a complex novel which mirrors Cat Kinsella's complicated life. Aides, her dad and Jacqui are still on the scene with their emotional demands and career wise Cat seems to be in the doldrums too. This coupled with the investigation into Holly's murder imbibes the story with a sense of disatisfaction with Cat's life and a more serious think about the future. As a reader, you can't help rooting for Cat, she deserves a bit of happiness. Hopefully Caz Frear won't keep us waiting too long to find out this time ...
An easy ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ from me.
