The End of Magic by Mark Stay
The End of Magic by Mark Stay is an original read which I thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish.
Stay has created an immersive world full of both magic and magical creatures that is completely immersive. Characters are engaging and suitably sympathetic or villainous as their role in the narrative requires. Conventions are played with: Effie the foul mouthed mermaid made me laugh out loud with her unconventional looks and behaviour.
Stay has a flair for character arcs with the three main protagonists: Rosheen, Sander and Oskar all exhibit emotional growth in their quests to do the right thing. Stay reminds us all that it's easy to do the right thing when life is bumbling along nicely but but it's so much more difficult when catastrophe strikes. In real life, as in The End of Magic, it is then we really see the character of the man, woman or youth.
Thanks to Heather Fitt for inviting me to be part of this tour.
